Problems with Compost

Problem:

Compost is either too wet (soggy) or stays slimy.

Poor aeration Your compost needs to be turned over more often. allowing air to get at the center of the compost will increase the energy levels of the compost and if enough nitrogen is available it will heat up. This will also help to dry it up some.

too much moisture Your adding too much water when your watering in the compost. Sprinkle only a light amount of water in between layers. Use filtered water for best results as chlorine water kills beneficial bacteria. Do not allow too much rain to fall on it. cover with a tarp.

not enough energy to cook up compost needs energy to cook up. bacteria need energy to work. What they need is minerals, carbon and nitrogen rich materials. The addition of Rock dust to your compost setup will increase minerals available to bacteria. The addition of animal manures is very important to adding bacteria, minerals and nitrogen to the compost pile.
