Medfly  eradication efforts are proving to be  a   great  waste  of energy  and money. Concentrating on the effect instead of the cause  is wasted  effort. Medfly spraying of Malathion or any other  chemical  is wasted  effort  and  will  not affect the  real  cause  of  the  Medfly spreading in southern Calif.   Medfly infestations are spreading through-out  the  world!  Even this is not the real cause of the Medfly problem. The  real cause is chemicals and the imbalances they have wreaked  upon our planets eco-system.

  1. In order to regain balance we must stop relying on chemicals to control our pests but instead rely more on maintaining a balanced eco- system, diversity rich with bacteria and enzymes. We must rely on sustainable organic methods of food production. We cannot depend on chemical control and the loop it causes forever. This system will break down and cause chaos and disorder,
  2. Re-Education of our farmers, retraining of professionals, re- teaching the teachers, is necessary. Our children must be taught the best way to grow and enjoy nature. Organics and the art of living without chemicals must be taught to all of our children and to their children and made into a way of life.
  3. Stop spraying any kind of chemicals.
  4. Start holding workshops to reach people on the various methods of natural Medfly control.
  5. Start workshops for farmers who can be affected by the Medfly. Show them natural methods of Medfly control.
  6. Encourage organic pest control methods with professionals by allowing for a natural/organic license for those wishing to use only organic methods of pest control.
  7. Encourage more research on developing natural predators.
  8. The best defense is a good offense.
  9. Provide for your property plenty of good rich compost, use only natural fertilizers
  10. Depend on natural predators to keep things under control. There are many natural predators of the Medfly. Many insects attack the fly and/or its eggs. Birds, toads, and other predators can keep fly populations down.
  11. Reduced use of chemicals increases functional diversity of life. It is this diversity that will maintain the balance. DE can be used to control the Medfly. DE can be added to water and sprayed on the fruit(s) affected by the Medfly. DE can also be sprayed on the ground around the fruit trees affected. Should be done in the spring.
  12. Garlic kills all flies on contact. Use Mosquito Barrier same as garlic barrier but stronger

  • The following formula can be used to spray on most fruits and vegetables to control various flies, especially the Medfly:
  • 2 drops natural soap....see 1 below
  • 1 cup Garlic Barrier or Mosquito Barrier or make your own
Mix well in gallon container. Add water to fill. Stir well. Spray on fruit and allow to dry. Can be sprayed directly on Med flies and other flies. Will also control beneficials and other insects so be careful where you spray.

  •     Another Formula

1 Cup Food Grade DE into panty hose, tie into a ball. allow to sit in 5 gallons water. Squeese the ball to allow some of the DE to get into the water. It shoud turn it milky. remove the DE ball, add a few drops natural soap and spray.
