Mosquitoes

The Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito is known to be a vector for various diseases and viruses.

West Nile Virus (WNV)
The Global climate changes have made more favorable environments as well as expanded its range. We are seeing more cases of WNV then ever before. The West Nile virus (WNV) is maintained in nature when an arthropod vector transmits the virus between vertebrate hosts. The primary vector for WNV in the United States is the Culex pipiens mosquito that commonly breeds in urban areas and prefers to feed on birds. Mosquitoes acquire WNV when feeding on infected birds. At least 43 mosquito species in the U.S., including other Culex, Aedes, Anopheles, and Psorophora mosquito species, have tested positive for WNV.. The virus is then stored in the mosquito's salivary glands and transmitted to humans and other incidental hosts when the mosquito takes a blood meal. The virus has been detected in many wild bird species. Humans, horses, and most other mammals are generally considered incidental or dead-end hosts, as they are not known to develop a high enough viral load to either transmit, or become a reservoir for West Nile virus but can be adversely effected if not healthy enough to fight it off.

Controlling Mosquitoes Naturally around the Home and Garden

  • 1. Remove conditions that allows them to live and breed
Eliminate standing water anywhere where mosquitoes can breed.
Change the water in bird baths, fountains, wading pools, rain barrels, and potted plant trays at least once a week to destroy potential mosquito habitats. If you can't change the water then add a fw drops of any of the oils mentioned below which will prevent larvae from breathing. Or a few drops of garlic will work just as well.
Fill temporary pools of water with dirt or add the oils or food coloring or spray with garlic or add a few drops garlic oil every day.
Keep swimming pool water treated and circulating. Use a misting system around the pool and spray garlic.

  • 2. Prevent exposure

Use Essential Oils for mosquito repellents when necessary and follow label directions and precautions.
Use Garlic as a mosquito repellent as it will not only kill the mosquitos on contact but also prevent them from finding you. If they cant find you, they cant bite you! You can eat garlic twice a day or place a small crush garlic into your shoes and wear it for the day. The garlic will enter your system thru your feet and will come out thru your skin! You only need one in your shoes, not needed in both but if you know you are going out into the woods say, I would put one in each shoe as well as take a few extra cloves with me!
Use clothing that protects you body such as head nets, long sleeves and long pants.
Bug Proof your windows and door screens b fixing any holes or breaks. Hang a screen on the doors.
Use a misting system around the house to keep mosquitos away.
Replace your outdoor lights with yellow "bug" lights that attracts less mosquitoes than ordinary lights.

  • 3. Install a misting system around the places you hang out like the porch or pool. A misting system is easy to install. Look for horse stall misting systems or you can make your own. A good idea is to mist around the house, use a timer to have it go on regularly.
