Organic treatment of Snails and Slugs in lawn:
If your lawn has this problem there are many things that need to be addressed. Lets
look at the possible causes of this problem:
1......Dead soil
If your soil is hard, compact and water runs off as fast as you put it on and you have
a hard time digging into it, your soil is dead! This is due to over fertilization with
chemicals such as high nitrogen, over use of lawn pesticides and fungicides.
2......Improper watering
over watering tends to water soak the soil, depriving it of oxygen needed by the soils
micro-organisms. Water sogged soil also kills the earthworm population.
3.......this causes a stressed out lawn/soil.
dead soil is prefect for snail/slugs to lay their eggs in.
The Organic Solution:
Provide for a healthy soil by eliminating the use of chemicals of any kind.
Top dress with compost several times per year. Aerate the soil by punching holes to allow
the compost to enter.
Control the watering.
Longer watering times done less often will allow water to seep down more
deeper, allowing for deeper lawn root system.
Use Garden grade DE Page by applying a thin coat at
night. Do not water during this time!. I would suggest that you water well for several
days before to bring them out then dust with the DE and allow to dry for a few days
afterwards.
