     Description of Insect

  •  copper colored adults, small black spots on back small sized orange to yellow grubs with black tipped spines adults over winter in plant debris. Yellow colored eggs laid underside of leaves.

     Description of Damage

  • grubs feed underside of leaves and leave skeletonized leaves. leaves dry up and die. reduced fruit production.

     Attacks

  1. lima bean,
  2. cow pea,
  3. bush bean,
  4. pole bean
  5. Spreads Bacterial diseases

     Organic Controls:

  1. cleaning up plant debris
  2. planting resistant varieties
  3. floating cover or super light barriers...blocks insect damage.
  4. Handpicking adults, larvae......pick pick pick
  5. Delay planting early harvesting
  6. Traps
  7. Barriers

    Safe Botanicals:

  1. Cayenne Pepper (Tabasco sauce)
  2. Garlic
  3. Pyrethrium
  4. Dr. Bronners Peppermint soap
  5. Garden Grade DE
  6. Rotenone use as directed. Use as a last resort.
  7. Neem, follow instructions for best results. Use as a last resort.
  8. Monterey Neem Oil 70% For Controlling Insects & Disease

  1. A sample formula for spraying:
  • In a quart water add: 5 drops Tabasco sauce 5 drops Dr. Bronners peppermint soap,  any natural soap 2 drops garlic oil or crushed or store bought or Guardian Spray or Garlic Barrier 2 drops Neem Oil, such as Neem Away, Safer Bio-Neem a weaker formula can be made to be sprayed onto leaves as a barrier to protect plants from attack. Try 1 drop of each. Avoid spraying during hot days. Test strength to avoid damaging plant. Spray a small part of the plant and come back next day. No damage? Ok to use. Spray stronger mix directly on bug.
  1. A good dust mixture is: 1 part Pyrethrium 1 part Garden Grade DE 1 part alfalfa meal 1/8 part cayenne pepper dust around plants and under leaves, don't water for 24 hrs

    soap A NOTE ABOUT SOAP:

  • Do not use soaps that are chemically made or that have strange chemical additives or preservatives. Instead use only natural soap, either citrus or peppermint based or try herbal soaps.   1. Predatory Nematodes
  2. Nematodes Hb for larvae
  3. Parasitic wasps and flies
  4. spined solider bug
