Whiteflies
Problem
-
Tiny white winged insects on undersides of leaves on fruit trees and vegetables and other plants.
-
A black mold forms around leaves.
-
Ants.
-
Whiteflies lay eggs underside of leaves which produce tiny white larva which then change
into adult form which have wings.
-
Whiteflies produce a nectar called honey dew. This attracts ants and other creatures and
also produces a fungus called scooty mold. In warm weather whiteflies grow year round.
Causes:
-
-
Using high nitrogen fertilizers are a main cause of this problem.
-
Not providing proper nutrition causes stress which also attracts whiteflies.
-
High nitrogen produces rapid succulent growth which attracts these insects and other
diseases.
-
Using chemical fertilizers which are usually high nitrogen based and do not provide all
the trace minerals needed for healthy growth.
Long Term Solution:
-
Provide for your plants the proper food. avoid high nitrogen fertilizers
-
Check soil PH
-
Use compost several times per year.
-
Use Rock dust as the primary mineral fertilizer.
-
Use an acid mulch
- Control The Ants
- Spray with Seaweed, Fish Emulsion, Nitron A-35, Agri Gro etc. to raise Brix
-
Try using Invisible Gardeners Superseaweed Brix
- Try using Invisible Gardeners Special Rock Dust Blend
- Don't worry about nitrogen since this is available from the air and earth naturally.
- Also use a good organic fertilizer which will have the right amount of nitrogen.
- Avoid using Urea since this will kill the soils microorganism.
Tools of the Trade
Providing nutrition takes time to bring things back to life. Here's what you do
while you are waiting...
Immediate Solutions:
-
Check out Natural Pest Control Chart for more ways to Control
-
Follow steps, use number 1 first then if it does not work oe onto number 2 and so on..
-
Spray whiteflies with Caffeine. Caffeine will not only kill the whiteflies but also help to raise the Brix. High Brix stops whiteflies from attacking plant.
-
Spray with Garlic to kill the whiteflies.
-
Use Dr.
Bronners Peppermint soap at 5 drops (more if needed, test for
strength) per quart water. Avoid city water when ever possible. Add some SuperSeaweed
or
liquid seaweed or fish emulsion. When buying fish emulsion avoid those with urea.
-
You can use a natural oil to spray on the leaves and insects. The oil will coat the
leaves and insects, killing the insects and killing the whiteflies. A good oil to use is
garlic oil, almost any kind of vegetable oil will do with garlic oil being the strongest.
You can also try Fine Horticultural oil
