crown gall on rose

Description of Disease:

Tumor like growth on canes or roots, most often found on bud unions.

Causes:

A Bacteria which enters plant thru cuts or wounds, caused by dead soil, eco-system, chlorinated city water, using high nitrogen fertilizers (urea based), poor health of plants due to improper nutrition, spreads from contaminated tools or soil, planting wrong variety / wrong location.

Immediate Solutions:

Remove affected areas of plant, sterilize tools after use (use 1% bleach solution), use soil sulfur to acidify the soil and to provide sulfur to the soil., apply compost and mulch over. Use a Garden Filter when watering to reduce chlorine in soil. Use Bacterial sprays such as Nitron A-35, Shure Crop, Superseaweed, Agri-Gro etc. Spray a fungus spray such as garlic, add 5 drops garlic oil to 1 quart water, add 2 drops Dr. Bronners Peppermint soap (as wetting agent) or you can use Jungle Rain and 5 tablespoons baking soda. Compost tea spray will also encourage beneficial bacteria. See compost tea page. Compost Tea Page

Short Term Solutions:

Composting/mulching several times per year, controlling water thru soaker or drip systems, using a garden filter when ever possible.

Proper Nutrition:

Use no chemicals, no high nitrogen , use animal manures, use only organic fertilizers, use only natural sprays mentioned in this book. Compost compost compost! Compost Production Dept see also rock dust dept Rock Dust Dept
