Natural Weed Control 101

See also    Natural Weed Control Chart

Generally speaking weeds will grow best in soil that is not rich in minerals. Weeds need mineral deficient soil to grow in, so keep your lawn well fed with minerals and natural bacteria. You will have very few weeds establishing themselves in your lawn. Proper weed control is established thru:

Proper mowing of lawns

Always pull up weeds before you mow to avoid spreading the seeds. Keep a sharp blade.

Correct watering

Regular deep watering is better then often shallow watering. Watering in AM is better then watering in PM.

Correct Fertilization

Stop using chemical fertilizers. Stop the high nitrogen cycle. Organics will provide plenty of nitrogen etc as needed by the lawn for healthy weed-free growth. Give lawns plenty of rock dust which provides minerals needed by healthy lawns. Provide your lawns with a top dressing of old horse manure or aged compost at least yearly. Chicken manure top dressed on your lawn 4 times per year will keep your lawn green and healthy. There are many natural fertilizers available on the market today.

Some Places Organic Lawn Fertilizers are available:

Making your own Organic Lawn Fertilizer

  5 lbs Alfalfa meal
5 lbs Rock dust or gypsum
  20 lbs compost (Finely ground)
10 lbs Aged chicken manure or Llama manure or rabbit manure (finely ground), or horse manure.
  5 lbs coffee grounds
  5 lbs white sugar
  10 lbs Earthworm castings
Mix well together. All items should be run thru a fine screen. Apply as needed.

Making your own liquid lawn food for spraying

  1 cup Nitron A-35
  1 oz Superseaweed
  1 cup Agri-Gro
  1/2 lb Rock dust
  1/2 lb Alfalfa meal
  1/2 lb Seaweed meal
  1 cup molasses or sugar
  1 can of Beer
Mix together and place into a panty hose tied into a ball. Allow to sit in filtered water or solarized water for an hour, strain and spray onto lawns. Best time is early am. See making your own foliar spray chapter for more. Of course the above is just an example, try making your own from others similar products.

Hand Weeding

Hand pulling of the weeds is an easy and natural way to control weeds. I suggest that you first spray the weeds with a mixture of Dr Bronners Soap and Safer Quick Shot soap (50/50) the day before (see below). This makes pulling the weeds up easier. Weeds can also be sprayed with this mixture and left in the ground. They will decompose and provide food for the soil. Test the strength of the soap mixture. Make to strength as needed.

Using Natural Soaps.

Weeds can be controlled by using natural soaps. Soap will burn them and they will die without having to remove them from the soil. Test for strength by applying directly onto a weed, mark the weed then see the results the next day. Weed should be burned. If not make mixture stronger or any natural soap. Mix these two soaps together at 50/50 ratio. Add 15 tablespoons per gallon sprayer. Should work on most weeds but will not damage the lawn. Don't water for 24 hrs and don't spray in midday or on a hot day. Spray directly onto weeds. Test for strength. Spray then wait until next day to see results. Should work within 24 hrs. If not make it stronger.

All-natural pre-emergence weed control adds nitrogen to your beautiful organic lawn!

Are children close-by? Relax! WOW! Plus and WOW! come from corn so they're not toxic.

Like WOW! Plus, original WOW! controls crabgrass, creeping bentgrass, foxtail, lamb's-quarters, purslane and other weeds just after they germinate, before you even notice them.

WOW! contains no lingering synthetic chemicals, so your family, friends and pets can enjoy your lawn right after you apply it! As it suppresses weeds, WOW! slowly releases nitrogen to keep your lawn green and beautiful.

Apply WOW! in early spring to stop annual weeds and spring-germinating perennial weed seeds. A second application (mid-August until first hard frost) will stop fall-sprouting weeds, including many perennial types. Applications at 10lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. provide adequate control. Applications at double that rate provide better control in most areas. Use a drop spreader, and water deeply after applying. Do not use on recently sown grass. Apply N-Lite! to provide the other nutrients needed for healthy thick turf. Note: For use only with drop spreaders!
